Ribbon Cutting at the Old Galveston Customhouse

Today, we were honored to attend the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the 1861 United States Customs House and Court House in Galveston, hosted by Shaun and Natalie Hodge. Camp Commander Daniel Pourreau presented our hosts with a Certificate of Recognition from Camp 2 and the Department of Texas and Louisiana, to honor their outstanding contributions to preserving this invaluable piece of history.

This historic site marks where Union forces, under Major General Gordon Granger, arrived on June 19, 1865. Accompanied by roughly 2,000 Union soldiers, they enforced General Order Number 3, reading and posting the decree across Galveston to bring long-awaited emancipation to Texas and spark the legacy of Juneteenth. The grand event was made complete with an appearance by living historians portraying President Lincoln and First Lady Mary alongside Galveston’s finest citizens!
