Welcome to Sarah Emma Seelye Auxiliary #1
History • Patriotism • Sisterhood
Welcome to the Sarah Emma Seelye Ladies Auxiliary #1! We are a vibrant Houston sisterhood dedicated to honoring history through meaningful community service. Chartered under the National Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), we proudly support the Lt. Cmdr. Edward Lea, USN Camp 2. Together, we keep the heroic memory of the Grand Army of the Republic alive and champion the patriotic traditions of Memorial Day.
Our passion extends directly into our community: we actively support disabled veterans and provide a strong network of care for our fellow Auxiliary sisters. If you love history, patriotism, and making a difference, there is a place for you here.
Our Namesake: The Courageous Sarah Emma Seelye
Chartered in Houston on December 7, 1996, our Auxiliary proudly bears the name of Sarah Emma Seelye, one of the most daring and remarkable figures of the Civil War. Defying the boundaries of her time, Seelye disguised herself as a man to enlist and fight for the Union Army.
A renowned heroine, her extraordinary bravery was officially recognized by Congress, granting her a military pension and induction as an honored member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Today, her legacy rests close to home; she is buried with full military honors in the GAR plot at Houston’s historic Washington Cemetery, alongside the fellow Union veterans she served.

What We Do: History in Action
Our members stay active year-round with a vibrant calendar of educational, commemorative, and social events. We frequently team up with the Sons of Union Veterans (SUVCW Camp 2) to bring history to life and give back to our community.
Here is a look at what you can experience with us:
- Honor & Remembrance: We participate in major patriotic ceremonies, including the Battle of Galveston Memorial Service in January, the historic San Jacinto Day Celebration in April, and deeply moving Memorial Day and Veterans Day tributes.
- Historical Exploration: We host group trips to regional museums and historic sites, bringing our heritage off the page and into the real world.
- Lifelong Learning: Our regular gatherings feature engaging lectures and presentations exploring Civil War history, local heritage, and the impactful legacy of women in history.
- Community & Camaraderie: Beyond our formal programs, we foster a close-knit sisterhood through continuous volunteer initiatives, collaborative projects with Camp 2, and seasonal social activities.
