Brothers and Sisters of the Allied Orders proudly gathered at the Grand Army of the Republic burial plot in Houston’s historic Glenwood Cemetery for a truly memorable Memorial Day 2026. It was a beautiful, heartfelt tribute as we called out names and placed red roses at each of the 10 GAR graves, while honorably reading aloud the names of all 50 additional Union veterans resting throughout Glenwood.
SVC Herbert Powers kept the day moving as our Master of Ceremonies, and Department Commander John Vander Meulen delivered an inspiring speech on what Memorial Day truly means to us today. We were also treated to a deeply moving reading of “When the Boys in Blue are Gone” by DUVCW National Registrar Susan Berry. A huge thank you to everyone who joined hands to make this happen, including the wonderful Sisters of the ASUVCW and DUVCW, and to our Patriotic Instructor Steve Brock, who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and kept the Camp 2 Bell ringing loud and clear!
We have been on a roll with the weather this year. Mother Nature treated us to yet another spectacular sunny day (with just enough breeze to unfurl the flags) as you will see in the videos and pictures below. Let us hope our good fortune continues into next month as we move south to Galveston for the Ribbon Cutting Event at the Historic US Customs House on June 11 and accompany Brother Stephen Duncan as he portrays General Gordon Granger for the reenactment of the reading of General Order No. 3 on Juneteenth.
